Thanks for your carpentry skills to make the Box.

Shack-in-a-Box - Colors Scheme:

Here is the planned color scheme for the box. It is intended to complement the green wagon (which we don't intend to paint).

Project - Shack-in-a-Box:

Several years ago LARC lost their ham shack location at the Boulder County Fair Grounds. The equipment and furnishings have since been liquidated.

Shack-in-a-Box is a 4 phased project to construct a portable station for use at Field Day and Service Projects like the annual Turkey Trot.

Presentation

IC7000 Users Manual (this is 4Mb - be prepared to wait)

Phase I: Purchase an IC7000, power supply and tuner. Mount it in the box on the wagon and store it in the Fire station. Target completion is Field Day 2007. This will be our primary station for field day.

Wire antennas and generators will be used for remote operation.

Phase I is complete with the exception of the box on the wagon which is still under construction.

Phase II: Computer control: Enable the station for the digital modes (SK32, FSK, TTY, Packet, etc.). All of these are possible with a computer and sound card interface. We'll need a computer, software and sound card interface. In addition, we should explore controlling the radio from a computer.

It would be great if this could be done by field day 2007.

Phase III: Emergency power: Purchase batteries, solar panels etc. to operate the station "off the grid". I held out the battery charger for this purpose. I think there will have to be some control and circuitry that goes with this?

A solar panel would surely require alternate or additional storage.

Phase IV: Portable antenna: I see some tubular (MA-40 & MA-550 in HRO catalog), crank-up masts in the catalogs. A rotor is mounted at the base. This kind of thing looks perfect for making a great emergency station.

Transporting this tower and antenna may require a container which will need some serious thought and consideration.

Shack-in-a-Box - How can you help?:

Let us know what you can do. Thanks.

Phase I

Phase III

  • develop an emergency power plan

  • procure emergency power hardware (batteries, solar panel, etc.)

Phase IV

  • develop a portable antenna plan

  • procure hardware
